Let’s imagine for a moment that we’re standing on the bleachers in a cheesy ‘90s teen movie. There are cheerleaders with pom poms, showing off their spirit fingers as they smile up at us, and wave their hands in the air like they just don’t care. We have a giant microphone in our hands with a foam finger in the other, and we’re ready to shout to the world: ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?! Okay, so we may have just plucked the most incredible Bring it On/Gladiator crossover movie from literal thin air – but there is a reason for this. You’re reading this blog because you’re interested in content (we hope), and you want your readers to be interested in your blog, viral site, or just your general copy. But how the heck do you create successful content without buying a voodoo doll of a MacBook Air and drinking avocado lattes? How do you keep those readers entertained?! Well, it turns out it’s all about your voice…
You entertain your readers with your lol-athon
Knock knock. Who’s there? A little old lady. A little old lady who? WOW, we had no idea you could yodel! Hands up if you laughed?! We’re just gonna go ahead and assume that you lol’d your socks off because we’re downright hilarious. Whether you rolled your eyes so far into your head they basically winked at the person behind you or whether you did give us a sympathy laugh, there’s one thing we do know for sure… That joke caught your attention. By adding voice and humour to your content, you are able to engage with your reader and give them something different. If they wanted to read a boring ol’ newspaper, they would do just that. Instead, they’ve come to your website for something unique and entertaining, so give the darn people what they want!
You set yourself apart from the evil warlocks (AKA your enemies)
The phrase “there are plenty more fish in the sea” is great when you’re going through a breakup and drowning your sorrows in a tub (or ten) of Ben & Jerry’s. However, when you’re trying to create a successful business, you kinda just wish those fish would go away and swim in another pond. With so many competitors to contend with, trying to stand out is definitely not as easy as the days of dial-up and AOL. When you add a little pizazz to your content, you are able to set yourself apart from those evil warlocks. You will be the dazzling unicorn who reigns supreme and proves that you’re not just another corporate clone. You do you ????
You create a brand for yourself because you are OG wizards
We don’t need to go back to school to know that the first rule of any Business 101 class is that you need to build a brand for yourself. It’s simple, duh! If you want to be an OG wizard in the Wizarding World of Content, you need to Accio over your common sense and realise that your brand is the most important factor when it comes to your success. You need to show your readers what you’re all about and that you’re not just another robot who smashes their fists against a keyboard to upload some drivel that will be a complete snooze-fest. Phew, needed to get that off my chest. Your content needs to reflect the product, the work, or the service that you provide, and be consistent the whole way through.
Your readers trust you because you’re #LOYAL
If you watched Love Island 2K18, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about, babes. (*Wink*) Although creating a voice for your content will bring in readers and keep them lol-ing their heads off for the whole night, it will also give your readers the chance to get to know you. Since the dawn of time – or the dawn of their companies – brands such as Buzzfeed and Innocent Smoothies have been consistent with their content. Buzzfeed is totally awesome IRL and will provide you with fire emoji quizzes that will get you totally lit, while Innocent will shove some epic puns and compliments your way through their packaging. Once you create that voice and maintain it, your readers will know what they expect from you and will come back time and time again. That’s what it’s all about, right? RIGHT?!
Creating the perfect content for your website isn’t rocket science. You know, unless your website really is about rocket science. Awkward. You just need to know what you’re doing and realise that you can add a little somethin’ somethin’ extra to your content because without a voice your content is gonna bomb…
